Gravel is one of the few physics-abiding blocks on Minecraft, similarly to Sand. It will fall as an entity if the block beneath it is removed, which makes it hazardous to dig carelessly in caves, as Gravel may fall on the player and suffocate them. Unlike water, it causes suffocation instantly and is not slowed by the Respiration enchantment.

Some Gravel fell on top of this Dungeon chest, making it impossible to open.

  • Gravel, Bedrock and Air are the only Overworld blocks to appear in the Nether.
  • If Gravel falls onto a non-solid block (like a Torch or Flower) it will break as an entity. This is true of all falling blocks.
