The Command Block is a block that can only be obtained by typing the cheat "/give <playername> command_block <number of items>" in the chat with cheats on. You can only place and/or change the designated command if you are a OPed player in creative mode. These blocks are primarily used in Adventure Maps and Servers. These blocks are not obtainable other than /give. Their main purpose is to execute a command when activated with a Redstone signal. The command block was added in 1.4.

Toughness[]

Command Blocks cannot be destroyed by any reasonable sized explosion and cannot be mined in Survival Mode. However, blue Wither skulls still damage and break them.

Sending at players:[]

There are four types of addressing for command blocks:

  • @p: sends command at nearest active player
  • @r: sends command at random active player
  • @a: sends command at all active players
  • @f: sends command at farthest active player

Commands:[]

  • /gamerule
  • /tpa
  • /gamemode
  • /clearinventory
  • /tp
  • /say
  • /me
  • /summon
  • /setblock
  • /give
  • /effect
  • /scoreboard

Unavailable Commands[]

  • /ban
  • /kick
  • /kill
  • /deop
  • /op

This is due to the potential for players to lock out a server using these commands.

Scoreboards[]

Scoreboards can be used to create teams, display stats such as number of kills, and much more besides.

Minecart With Command Block[]

This new Minecart has a block ID of 139, but cannot be obtained with the /give command, making it un obtainable to most players. It will run its command if it passes over a lit Activator Rail. If it is at full speed when it hits the rail, it will run its command 3 times.
